The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a report about the impact of the SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access, and Recovery) program.

SOAR aims to increase access to Social Security disability benefits for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and who have a serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder.

Below are some of the report's findings:

  1. Over the last 16 years, SOAR has assisted nearly 100,000 people.
  2. Since SOAR began, 65% of SOAR applicants have been approved upon initial application.
  3. SOAR has helped more than 8,000 people get approved after their applications were denied.
