The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is awarding $142 million in Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) funding to 33 communities, 11 of which are rural.

HUD reviewed the grant applications alongside youth who have experienced homelessness , the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), and the departments of Education and Health and Human Services (HHS).

The money can be used to build systems for:

  1. Rapid re-housing;
  2. Permanent supportive housing;
  3. Transitional housing;
  4. Host homes;
  5. Youth-focused performance measurement; and
  6. Coordinated entry.

“Over the next several months, selected communities will work with their youth advisory boards, child welfare agencies, and other community partners to create a comprehensive community plan to end youth homelessness. The awarded communities will also participate in a program evaluation to inform the federal effort to prevent and end youth homelessness going forward and will serve as leaders in the nation on the work to end homelessness among young people,” the department stated in a press release.
