HUD Awards More Indian Community Development Block Grants

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded 49 Tribal communities with more than $52 million in Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) funding through the American Rescue Plan.

This round of grants follows an additional $74 million awarded in November to 68 Tribal communities. The American Rescue Plan will provide a total of $280 million for the ICDBG program through September 30, 2025. HUD will announce more grants on a rolling basis.

The money can be used for emergencies that constitute imminent threats to health and safety and that are designed to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus. The funds can be used for:

  1. Housing - Housing rehabilitation, land acquisition to support new housing construction, and under limited circumstances, new housing construction
  2. Community Facilities - Infrastructure construction (e.g., roads, water, and sewer facilities; single or multipurpose community buildings)
  3. Economic Development - Wide variety of commercial, industrial, agricultural projects which may be recipient-owned and operated or owned and/or operated by a third party
