HHS Renews Public Health Emergency for COVID-19

On April 12, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) renewed the public health emergency for COVID-19. It was set to expire April 16.

The renewal means that the federal funding, flexibilities, and waivers with expiration dates directly tied to the public health emergency are still usable.

Earlier this month, USICH published a tool called “ Expiring Federal Provisions That May Impact Homelessness. ” It identifies federal funding, flexibilities, and waivers—including but not limited to those linked to the public health emergency—that are set to expire at various points in Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 , which ends September 30, 2022.

When HHS does decide to end the COVID-19 emergency, which has been in place since January 27, 2020, it has stated that it would provide states with 60 days’ notice.
