Iowa Homelessness Statistics
As of January 2017, Iowa had an estimated 2756 people experiencing homelessness as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of Iowa homeless population statistic, 382 were family households, 171 were veterans, 140 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 199 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.
Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2016-2017 school year shows that the state of Iowa had an estimated youth and children homeless population of 6774 with 104 students still unsheltered. Of students who had a nighttime residence, 1410 were in shelters, 507 were in hotels/motels, and 4753 were doubled up.
