Comprehensive Report on Children Experiencing Homelessness in Our Nation’s School System
June 16, 2011
This month the National Center for Homeless Education released the latest numbers from the Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program. Over 900,000 children attending public schools experienced homelessness last year. There were substantial increases in the number of students experiencing homelessness with disabilities and in those with limited English proficiency. Homelessness can have long lasting effects on children both in educational attainment and in social development.
