On
January 27th, the Interagency Council in cooperation with the US
Department of Housing and Urban Development, US Department of Health
and Human Services and the US Department of Veterans Affairs published
in the Federal Register a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA)
to provide $35 million in housing and supportive services funds
to move chronically homeless individuals and disabled homeless families
off the streets into permanent housing. The application period for
these funds closed April 14. During the 75-day application period,
we received over 600 calls on our Inquiry Line. We thank everyone
for their interest.
The
NOFA outlines the review process we will be using to make grant
awards. The Council and our partner agencies look forward to reviewing
the applications to select those that are the best models of a collaborative
community approach to obtaining the performance outcomes described
in the NOFA.
During
this application process, the Council received many inquiries about
whether there will be another round of funding. The President's
2004 budget request to Congress includes a proposal for a Samaritan
Initiative, for which this collaborative initiative was the forerunner.
If Congress approves funding for the Samaritan Initiative, additional
funds will be available in 2004.
